mystate bank arena opening Day

The Derwent Entertainment Centre was opened in 1989 and was the home of the Hobart Devils NBL basketball side until the team was kicked out of the league in 1996. In the years since the DEC was refereed to as a white elephant as it would only host a few big events a year and would cost local tax payers 1 million dollars a year in up keep.

In 2021 the Derwent Entertainment Centre is now known as MyState Bank Arena and is the new home of the Tasmanian NBL side the JackJumpers. The DEC was bought by the state government from the local council and has had a 66 million upgrade, the results are amazing.

The opening day was the 14th of November 2021 with the JackJumpers playing a pre-season game. The food outlets have had a big upgrade with a grab and go system in place similar to what they have at Blunstone Arena which helps reduce queues for food.

The toilets have been remodelled, there is a permanent shop to sell JackJumper and concert merchandise, with new function and meeting areas also renovated.

On the court big jumbotrons hang above the court, the premium seating has been upgraded with padded seats and cup holders added. New NBL standard lighting has been installed which can produce some great effects. Walking into the court you are amazed at how great it looks and is a joy to watch a basketball game at.

The MyState Bank Arena is now not only a world class facility for basketball but also for concerts and other events. It is a real asset for all Tasmanian’s.

On the game side the JackJumpers lost their pre-season game to the Brisbane Bullets 79 to 89 but I look forward to many great moments from the team and the arena that they call home.
