My Silverdome Basketball Experience

I recently attended my first NBL game at The Silverdome in Launceston the second home of the Tasmanian JackJumpers. Built is 1984 The Silverdome was Australia’s first indoor velodrome and is capable of hosting other indoor events like concerts, netball and basketball.

The arena

The facility does show it’s age and reminds me of the old Derwent Entertainment Centre before the upgrade. The sell out crowd of 3,532 were very loud and makes for a great game experience, the seating setup does look a bit strange with some seats in the far corner not having their seat directly facing the court. The two video screens are on the each side of the court so you need to turn your head to see them if you are in the main stands, but for an arena not was not made for basketball it does shape up just fine even if it does like a bit strange watch the game on tv.

The food options are your standard favorites hot chips, hot dogs, pies and sausage rolls but the addition of an outside food cart selling nachos and burrito bowls was a big plus for people that wanted something a bit different.

If you want a good car park then best to get to the arena early and be quick to leave when the game is over otherwise you may have a bit of a wait to get out of the car park.

Overall The Silverdome makes a great second home for the JackJumpers and a good road trip for people coming from Hobart to attend the game. A upgrade of the facilitates like the Derwent Entertainment received would be welcomed but until then I look forward to seeing more games there in the future
